6 Biblical Ways To Deal with Emotionally Immature People
Ever dealt with someone who’s defensive, manipulative, or just refuses to grow up? As a Christian counselor I’ve heard limitless stories of this very situation. Parent disappointed in adult child. Spouse tired of having to raise her husband like one of her children. Employer having to hand-hold a worker who has no work ethic, no skills in interacting with other workers, and seems to have no clue about personal responsibility.
The Bible provides us insight into how to interact with emotionally immature people in our lives. Here are 6 biblical ways to deal with emotionally immature people—without losing your peace.
#1 – Don’t take the bait
Proverbs 15 says a gentle answer turns away wrath. You don’t have to match their drama with more drama. Stay calm. Stay kind. Stay grounded.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath,but a harsh word stirs up anger.The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.”

#2 – Set clear boundaries
Even Jesus walked away when people were toxic or unrepentant. Love doesn’t mean unlimited access. Boundaries are biblical—and necessary.
“If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.”
Matthew 10:14
#3 – Don’t try to fix them
You’re not their Holy Spirit. Your job is to reflect truth, not force change. Maturity is their responsibility.
“Each person must carry their own load.”
Galatians 6:5
#4 – Speak truth in love
Ephesians 4:15 says we grow when we speak truth in love. Not sarcasm. Not guilt. Not silence. Just honest, kind words—even when it’s hard.
“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”

#5 – Respond, don’t react
Galatians 5 says the fruit of the Spirit includes self-control. So pause. Pray. Then respond from a place of wisdom, not emotion.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

#6 – Pray more than you preach
God knows what they need more than you do. When you can’t get through to them, get on your knees. You can’t force someone to grow up… but you can grow stronger in how you respond.
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
