Performance on a stage

No Performance Necessary!

#18 IN MY CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER JOURNEY THROUGH ROBERT MCGEE’S BEST-SELLING BOOK, THE SEARCH FOR SIGNIFICANCE.

Though we were God’s enemies, He loved us and longed to rescue us from our sins, designating the sinless Christ to become our substitute. Only Christ could avert God’s righteous wrath against sin, so in love the Father kept silent as Jesus hung from the cross. All of His anger, all of the wrath we would ever deserve, was poured out on Christ, and Christ became sin for us.

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV

Because He paid the penalty for our sins, and God’s wrath was avenged, God no longer looks upon us through the eyes of judgment. Instead, He now lavishes His love upon us. The scriptures teach that absolutely nothing can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39). He has adopted us into a tender, intimate, and powerful relationship with Him (Romans 8:15).

Performance on a stage

No Need To Perform

Because we are His children, performance is no longer the basis of our worth. We are unconditionally and deeply loved by God, and we can live by faith in His grace. We were spiritually dead, but the Lord has made us alive and has given us the high status of sonship to the almighty God. It will take all eternity to comprehend the wealth of His love and grace. The apostle Paul explains the incomprehensible gift this way:

“But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved. For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

Ephesians 2:4-9 NLT

In my next posting I will be examining potential obstacles to receiving this truth about God’s amazing gift of propitiation.
