The Choleric Temperament
Understanding the Choleric Temperament
Life’s uncertainties cause emotional strain and stress for everyone. Each of the five inborn temperaments predisposes individuals to certain predictable tendencies in their emotional reactions. The Choleric temperament is highly susceptible to the effects of unwanted change.
Unique Characteristics of the Choleric Temperament
The Choleric temperament is the most powerful of the five temperaments. It has produced both feared dictators and diabolical criminals, as well as great leaders, supervisors, CEOs, officers, and administrators. The Choleric temperament equips individuals to lead others effectively.
The Apostle Paul: A Choleric in the Bible
The Apostle Paul exemplifies a Choleric. Before his conversion on the Damascus Road, Paul used his temperament strengths for self-interest and terrorizing Christians. After his salvation, Paul became the Apostle to the Gentiles. Paul’s example shows that spiritual rebirth does not change temperament; it transforms the purpose of one’s temperament strengths.
Strengths and Weaknesses of the Choleric
Cholerics are extremely tough-willed and seldom change their minds, even if wrong. They want total control over themselves and others, believing they know what is best. Cholerics often struggle with anger and rarely express emotions like love, empathy, tenderness, warmth, and compassion.

Living Through Spiritual Lenses
Cholerics can navigate life’s uncertainties by viewing them through spiritual lenses. Trusting in God’s plan and submitting to His authority can help Cholerics face challenges without fear of failure or loss of control. The Bible provides guidance and hope for Cholerics:
- “We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)
- “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6)
- “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.” (Proverbs 23:26)
- “Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” (Luke 9:24)

- “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

By submitting to God, Cholerics can achieve greatness for the Kingdom of God, using their temperament strengths for His glory.
