What To Anticipate In Christian Counseling

I’ve discovered that there are some folks who, for whatever reason, seem to to have pretty strong feelings about counselors, whether Christian or otherwise. Maybe they’ve not been provided an accurate picture of what to anticipate in Christian counseling. There are a few common reasons this seems to be the case:

  • Have had a bad or negative experience with a counselor or therapist in the past.
  • Someone they know and trust has had a negative experience with counseling in their past.
  • Their family culture makes it clear that “we don’t air our dirty laundry.”
  • Their religious faith culture may have taught them that God is the only counselor they need.
  • Their religious faith culture may have taught them they only need faith in order to be healed

You may be a person who has had hesitations, maybe from this list or otherwise, that have kept you from getting the Christ-centered guidance you need. If so, I’d like to paint a picture for you of what you might expect as a client in our office with any of our three licensed Christian counselors:

<THIS ARTICLE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION>

You’ll step into an environment that feels more like home than a clinical practice or institution

One of us will personally greet you and welcome you to our office when you arrive

Your initial session will be dedicated to building trust and hearing and validating your needs and concerns

The next couple sessions will, in part, consist of us introducing you to your God-given temperament

These sessions will also be a time for us to learn more about you and your situation, and to help you begin to experience hope

We’ll continue to meet consistently to help you find Christ-centered remedies for your struggle or situation

Many clients continue to meet intermittently for weeks or even months merely to have an ally walk with them on their journey
