As Christians, we are in a world that is not our home. Our spirit is constantly wrestling with our flesh, and the world is constantly sending signals pulling us away from God. Jesus warned his disciples of the trouble to come. John 16:33 says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Parents have differing views on whether to homeschool or send their children to public school. For the parents who choose to send their kids to public school, equip them to decipher the messages of the world and to be a light in their schools.

God Is Our Strength

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10

Satan likes to trick Christians into believing that we are helpless against the dark forces of this world, and so are our children. When we look at God’s word, however, we see the opposite is true. God encourages Israel by reassuring them of His presence. David speaks of God’s presence in Psalms 139:7,11-12, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.” The Holy Spirit lives in each of us who have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Teach your young students and teens that they have the power of the Lord with them everywhere they go. They are not vulnerable to evil when they are acutely aware of the Lord’s presence and protection over them.

His Children Know His Voice

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

John 10:27

I once learned that bank tellers learn how to spot fraudulent money by studying the real thing. Once they know what an actual $100 bill looks like, they are able to spot the fakes fairly easily. The same is true with God’s word. As we study the Bible, we grow in knowledge of who God is and attune to His voice. This is an important skill for our children to have because there are many sources claiming to be the truth. Our students must know Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life in order to choose Him amongst the crowd. Helping them grow a desire to read the Bible and modeling the importance of God’s word in your own lives will support them as they strengthen their own faith.

Do Life In Community

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Proverbs 27:17

Teaching your children how to find good friends and be good friends is important. A child or teen upholding Christian values in a public school will be in the minority. It is important to teach them to show the love of Jesus to all, growing in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22). It is equally important to teach them how to know when a person should be in their circle of those who influence them. God has designed us to live in community with each other and strengthen one another. If your child is choosing to lean on those who are not pointing them to the Lord, they will be tempted to distance themselves from God as well. This does not mean to avoid or judge children who value different things than us, as we can learn something from everyone, but teach your children how to lean on others who will point them back to God. As they learn healthy boundaries and expectations in friendships, they will flourish in their schools and lead others to Christ.
